Microsoft will release a series of updates for its OneNote apps on Windows over the next 12 months in order to create a unified user experience. People can currently use two versions: the OneNote app that comes with Office and the OneNote for Windows 10 app that can be found in the Microsoft Store.

However, Microsoft will update the OneNote app with features that are currently exclusive to the counterpart that comes pre-installed on Windows 10, as well as give the program a visual refresh.
Microsoft had planned to kill the OneNote app when the one for Windows 10 became available, but it changed its mind and brought it back in 2019. A year later, it updated the note-taking program with a slew of new features and bundled it with Office installations.
Now, Microsoft says it will update OneNote with visual elements that will be shared with other Windows apps as part of Microsoft’s efforts to make Windows 11 look more consistent.
The combined OneNote app will also have access to the most recent Microsoft pen and ink features, as well as a new navigational UI layout option.
Those who already have the app installed with Office don’t need to do anything except wait for the upcoming updates. Those who use OneNote for Windows 10 will receive an in-app invitation to upgrade to the other application once it is ready.
The company expects to begin sending out invitations in the second half of 2022, and it is now advising organizations to require their employees to use the OneNote app in order to avoid having to migrate next year.
