European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has requested that member states buckle up for a meeting tomorrow in the event that Brexit deal is finalized today as negotiations between David Frost and Michel Barnier are currently going on in what is seen as the final day of talks.
Both sides are still locked on key issues like fishing even though they’re struggling to secure 11th hour Brexit trade deal to avoid a split after December 31 which is the end of the transition period.
We also learned that Ms von der Leyen and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold a phone call meeting on Brexit trade deal later today to ensure a deal is certain, even though their Monday meeting aimed at bridging major gaps was a failure.
Boris Johnson arranged for the meeting after claiming that the most likely outcome is a failure to reach a deal, with the UK then relying on World Trade Organisation terms – meaning tariffs and quotas on trade with the EU.
A lot of sources have expressed hope that a late-hour deal could be secured before Christmas day, with some saying the EU officials would work on Christmas day on the text. But nothing has happened until now and everyone is watching.
