President Emmanuel Macron defended the strong commitment that was made by the French government to improve the working conditions of caregivers, during a lively exchange with staff from a Paris hospital who demanded salary be increased.

“I do not want to drop the hospital!” Assured the Head of State in the face of caregivers from the Rothschild hospital who had gone out into the street while he was visiting a neighboring association supporting caregivers. “No more money for the public hospital,” proclaimed a banner waved by several of them.

“We are all mobilized. There has been a lot of work” with the Ségur de la santé agreements signed in July between the government and professional and union organizations. These are acts, not just words which relate to a release of more than eight billion euros per year, which has never been done. And I also hear the anger of those who say that things are not going fast enough.”

The President advised that everyone affected to be more patience while awaiting parliamentary scrutiny in the coming weeks of the Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS) for 2021.

“There are no reinforcements, but there are the patients who are arriving in greater numbers with the resumption of the Covid-19 epidemic, criticized a nurse. The attraction for the health profession is not there,” another caregiver from the Rothschild Hospital said.

The Ségur de la santé agreement signed in July for hospital workers, excluding doctors includes a general increase of 183 euros net. The government has decided to advance the first increase of 90 euros net to October at the latest, instead of January the second of 93 euros remaining fixed for March 1.

A stretcher-bearer told Emmanuel Macron, “180 euros, it does not pass, it is not enough.”

Before meeting with the caregivers, President Macron had met helpers who help their elderly, sick or disabled loved ones on a daily basis and whose executive wants to improve living conditions. He also held talks with members of the Handicap Respite Platform for Caregivers (PHARE), within the association Overseas Relief for Children (OSE).
