According to reports from US media on Thursday, April 18, Israel has launched an air strike against Iran in retaliation for a weekend attack.

ABC, CBS, SurgeZirc, and CNN, among other media outlets, quoted US officials in reporting the early Friday Middle East strikes. As of now, there has been no comment from the White House or Pentagon regarding this development.

Following the reported air strike by Israel, Iran activated its air defence system over several cities, as reported by state media.

This came after explosions were heard near the central city of Isfahan, home to a symbolically important nuclear research centre. However, according to Iranian media, these nuclear facilities remain safe despite the incident.

The recent air strike by Israel is seen as a response to Iran’s firing of hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel over the weekend.

While most of these projectiles were successfully intercepted, the attack prompted Israel to issue a warning that it would retaliate. This escalation of tensions follows an attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus, which was widely blamed on Israel.

Iranian state television acknowledged a “loud noise” near Isfahan, without providing immediate details.

Spokesperson Hossein Dalirian, from Iran’s civilian space program, stated on the X social media platform that several small “quadcopter” drones had been shot down. However, it remains unclear whether this incident is related to the ongoing situation in Iran.

As of now, Israel’s military has declined to comment on the matter.
