The time for the big departure has come. After long months of concern related to the coronavirus epidemic in the country, a first wave of French people hit the road at the beginning of July. Head for the holidays with, in the suitcase, the tools you need to bask in the sun: a towel, a swimsuit and a good pair of glasses.
This season, an impressive model of sunglasses has invaded the market and, as a sine qua non, social networks. The frame, usually transparent plastic, is rectangular. The glasses, colored. Impossible to be missed, they are everywhere.
The ones worn by American actress Barbie Ferreira, known for her role in the HBO series “Euphoria”, are green. The shapes are straight. They are signed Jacquemus. At Fenty, Rihanna imagined them in a smaller format.
The blue of the retro-superfuture Italian eyewear hypnotizes. Similar and more accessible models are available on the Weekday and Urban Outfitters merchant sites. For stylist Dinah Sultan of the Parisian trend office Peclers, “this is really the new fashion in vogue”.
“It’s a frontal response to all the very round models we’ve had in recent years,” she assures us. The aesthetic is fun and breaks with that of so-called ‘normcore’ glasses, that is to say those with very thin metal frames and mineral lenses. It’s a snub to basic sunglasses. ”
Less flattering glasses
They are reminiscent of a decade, the 1990s. “There is indeed a personality who wore it at that time, it is Kurt Cobain”, breathes Pascal Monfort at HuffPost . The founder of the forward-looking marketing consultancy firm REC is referring here to the big, very big sunglasses that the Nirvana singer had on his nose from time to time, as at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles in 1993.
His are much more rounded, but testify to the same whimsical spirit. They are similar to a model from the Loewe brand in collaboration with Paula’s Ibiza, designed by the British fashion designer Jonathan Anderson in 2019. Their shape, more rectangular, has an oval focal length.
