The royal family’s ongoing drama continues to unfold, and it’s a sad and hard situation, says former royal aide Jason Knauf, who has a front-row seat to the tension between Prince Harry and Prince William.
The royal brothers, once inseparable, are now navigating a strained relationship, leaving many wondering what’s next. Jason Knauf, who worked closely with Harry, William, Kate Middleton, and Meghan Markle, shed some light on their fractured bond during an interview on 60 Minutes Australia on Feb. 23.

“It’s very difficult to have this stuff play out in the public eye, but [William]’s chosen to keep his thoughts on it private,” Jason revealed, offering a rare glimpse into the royal family’s inner circle. “And I think all of us who know him really have to respect that we should do the same.”

But just because Prince Harry and Prince William are at odds doesn’t mean it’s always been this way. Like any family, the royals have had their ups and downs, Knauf explains, though the heartbreak of the rift still stings.
“We have ups and downs in family, even when you really love someone,” he admitted. “You can have times when you don’t want to spend that much time with them.”
While it’s clear there’s tension, the history of their bond is undeniable. As Jason put it, “They achieved a lot together, and none of that can ever be taken away.”
A Bittersweet Farewell and a Royal Wish
Jason also reflected on his work with Harry and Meghan during their 2018 wedding, describing it as “an amazing, magical experience” and wishing them nothing but happiness with their family.
And even though the brothers’ public communications are rare, there was a small, sweet moment of connection last September when William and Kate wished Harry a Happy 40th Birthday on their Instagram Story and their mom Princess Diana would have wanted nothing more than sweet brotherly relationship for them.
