Jean-Michel Aulas, the historic and iconic president of Olympique Lyonnais (OL) until 2023, is considering a bold new chapter: running for the mayoralty of Lyon.

Known for transforming the once debt-ridden football club into a powerhouse of French football, Jean-Michel Aulas’ name is synonymous with success. But now, at 75, he is exploring a shift into the political arena, specifically targeting the 2026 municipal elections in Lyon, his beloved city.

The idea seemed unlikely just months ago, but it’s gaining traction. In February 2025, Aulas shared his thoughts with Le Figaro, revealing that he’s been surprised by the number of people urging him to run.

“The requests are numerous,” he said, hinting at the growing political buzz around him. While Aulas is no stranger to the public eye, this marks a significant departure from his sports and business roots, signalling a potential new political career.

A Polling Surge Fuels Aulas’ Political Ambitions

The political winds are shifting in Lyon. A poll commissioned by Jean-Michel Aulas shows him gaining ground in the race against the current mayor, Grégory Doucet.

With 17% of voting intentions, Jean-Michel Aulas is only five percentage points behind Doucet, indicating he could be a formidable contender in the upcoming municipal elections.

This support has caught the attention of both the right and the centrist Macronist camp, who see Aulas as a viable candidate who can bring fresh perspectives to the city’s leadership.

Despite his success in sports, Aulas has stayed connected to Lyon’s civic life and has maintained a public profile beyond football. His entry into the mayoral race is not just a political manoeuvre; it’s a response to a local demand for leadership that is both experienced and deeply rooted in the city’s values.

As one political leader, Emmanuel Hamelin of the Horizons party, put it: “Jean-Michel Aulas is an unavoidable figure if he chooses to run. His personality and experience make him a legitimate candidate.”

Jean-Michel Aulas’ Growing Political Appeal and Key Meetings

Jean-Michel Aulas’ political ambitions are increasingly taking shape, with several political figures supporting his potential candidacy.

He recently met with Gabriel Attal, the secretary general of the Renaissance party, and is expected to have discussions with advisors at the Élysée Palace soon. These meetings highlight Aulas’ growing presence in political circles, especially within the Macronist movement.

Franck Riester, a prominent figure in the presidential party, also expressed support for Aulas, emphasizing that his background and connection to Lyon make him an appealing candidate. “He’s someone with experience of the city and could bring a fresh perspective to the municipal leadership,” Riester stated.
