Emmanuel Macron praised the “extraordinary wealth” of France’s wine sector, calling it “a world of excellence that irrigates our territories,” as he accepted the title of “Personality of the Year 2022” from the Revue du vin de France on Thursday, January 6. (RVF).

During a ceremony in Paris, the Head of State declared himself “very happy” with the award, which was given to a President of the Republic for the first time.

A ceremony held when – for all the volunteers – “Dry January” has only just begun, an operation to spend a month without drinking a drop of alcohol… which, unlike similar anti-smoking campaigns, still lacks the right to state support.

According to Denis Saverot, editorial director of the RVF, the award was given to him because Emmanuel Macron “systematically defends wine,” whereas his predecessors were either “indifferent” or “opponents” of the beverage.

“For the first time in 40 years, you have had the audacity to assert, like d’Artagnan and Portos: ‘I drink wine every day, noon and evening’”, he said, pointing that his review was “not about politics”.

Emmanuel Macron was well received in the wine world when he stated in 2018 that “there would be no amendment to toughen the Evin law,” which has regulated advertising for alcoholic beverages since 1991, much to the chagrin of anti-alcohol organizations.

In his speech, the president praised a sector that “carries the image, the excellence of France,” and which represents “a part consequence” of the economy with its 85,000 farms and a trade surplus of around 13 billion euros (before the Covid crisis)

He added, “The wine is the demonstration of the fact that to be French, one does not have to be closed” because “you are rooted who thirst to embrace the world.”

He emphasized the state’s “solidarity” as the sector was battered by the Trump administration’s imposition of taxes, the pandemic, and the “historic spring freeze of 2021”. He also emphasized the importance of crop insurance reform, which must be passed before the end of the legislative session.

“I share your concerns about the impact of global warming,” Emmanuel Macron added while highlighting the need to strengthen research to “have more resistant grape varieties”.
