Meghan Markle’s look for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday paid tribute to the late monarch in more ways than one.
In addition to a pair of pearl-and-diamond earrings given to her by Her Majesty ahead of the couple’s first solo outing in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex looked sophisticated in a Stella McCartney black cape dress that royal fans may recognize.

The sleek ensemble also followed the funeral’s dress code, which called for black knee-length dresses or coats, as well as black hats and optional veils; while Markle’s broad-brimmed hat lacked a veil, her sister-in-law Kate Middleton’s did.
The Duchess of Sussex, who, like the Princess of Wales, did not walk in the Queen’s funeral procession but instead joined the rest of the royals at Westminster Abbey for the service, is famous for her love of a caped silhouette.
She wore a cream-coloured Givenchy cape gown to her aforementioned joint appearance with Her Majesty in 2018, and she also wore caped gowns to her royal tours of the South Pacific and Morocco in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
She also chose several colourful caped styles for her final appearances as a working member of the monarchy in 2020, effectively exiting royal life in a dramatic fashion.

On social media Monday, some speculated that Meghan Markle, who has had a tumultuous relationship with her husband’s family, had chosen a cape to send a message once more.
“Superhuman powers needed indeed. Brace yourself, Duchess,” one person quipped.
