Kylie Jenner has sparked mixed reaction after releasing her new Kylie Skin hand sanitizer ($7), with some social media users accusing the 23-year-old beauty mogul of profiting off the pandemic.
Kylie Jenner tweeted to announce Tuesday’s launch, “My @kylieskin hand sanitizer is here!! 80% alcohol, fast-drying, and formulated with glycerin to prevent dryness!’”
Momager Kris Jenner also tweeted, “’ Kylie Skin Hand Sanitizer is here! So many incredible benefits in this product.”
Following the product’s launch, many took to Twitter to accuse Jenner of cashing in on the COVID-19 crisis. One wrote, “Kylie really made kylie skin hand sanitizer…………. like ? Let’s profit off a pandemic,” while another added, “Wow making a buck off covid. Low.”
“This feels like the spiritual successor to the [Kendall] Jenner Pepsi commercial,” another added, referring to the 2017 backlash over her supermodel sister’s famously “tone-deaf” advertisement.
Some other critiques of the sanitizer took a lighter tone, with one saying, “Just what I needed! Pink sanitizer,” and another joking, “I used Kylie Jenner hand sanitizer and now all my germs are snatched.”
However, there are some other fans who defended the young business mogul.
“Hope you’re having the same energy for all the corporations who didn’t make masks and hand sanitisers that now are,” one person wrote, referencing the many private companies who released their own high-end sanitisers in the wake of last spring’s widespread shortage.
Others showed interest to have the pale pink product on hand, with one writing, “can’t wait to use it!!”
It’s not the first time a member of the Kardashian-Jenner crew has become involved in a COVID-related controversy; Kim Kardashian was similarly accused of using the pandemic for profit when she added face masks to her Skims line in March.
Throughout the pandemic, the famous family has repeatedly made headlines for their “tone-deaf” activities, from their extravagant Christmas celebrations to Kim’s private island birthday bash.
